If you’ve ever lifted your brows with your fingertips and noticed a more refreshed, alert look, you’ve seen the effect a brow lift can achieve permanently — an awakened, youthful appearance.
A brow lift, or forehead lift, is a surgery designed to elevate a drooping brow, smooth forehead wrinkles, and rejuvenate the upper face. It addresses issues like deep furrows or a heavy, sunken brow that makes you look tired. Here’s what you can expect if you’re considering a brow lift at Northstate Plastic Surgery.
Who Makes an Ideal Candidate for a Brow Lift?
Ideal candidates for brow lift surgery typically meet the following criteria:
- Noticeable brow drooping, forehead lines, or frown lines. Many candidates experience hooded upper eyelids caused by descending brow tissue.
- Good overall health to ensure efficient healing post-surgery. Conditions that affect healing should be addressed beforehand.
- Realistic expectations about the procedure, understanding it will refresh and rejuvenate, not completely transform their appearance.
- A personal desire for the surgery, rather than motivation from external pressure.
If you smoke, quitting at least 4-6 weeks before surgery and remaining smoke-free during recovery is essential, as smoking hampers blood flow and increases complication risks.
Choosing Between Different Brow Lift Techniques
Dr. Myers has trained in several brow lift techniques. He will recommend the best approach based on your facial anatomy, extent of brow drooping, hairline position, and desired results.
Traditional (Coronal) Brow Lift
This method involves an incision from ear to ear across the top of the head, hidden in the hair. It offers excellent access to the forehead, providing dramatic, long-lasting results. However, it may not be ideal for those with high or thinning hairlines due to the risk of raising the hairline further.
Endoscopic Brow Lift
This is a minimally invasive approach using small incisions within the hairline. A tiny camera and specialized tools are used to lift the brow with minimal scarring, quicker recovery, and reduced numbness, though it may result in slightly less dramatic lifting compared to the traditional approach.
Temporal (Lateral) Brow Lift
This technique targets the outer third of the brow through small incisions in the temporal hairline, ideal for addressing drooping at the outer brow. It’s often combined with eyelid surgery for overall upper face rejuvenation.
Direct Brow Lift
This approach removes a small amount of skin above the brows, offering precise control over brow position. While it leaves more visible scars, it’s useful for patients with heavy brows or receding hairlines, particularly when function (e.g., improving vision) is a priority.
What Happens During Brow Lift Surgery
Most brow lifts are performed as outpatient procedures under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia. The choice of anesthesia depends on your health, preferences, and the technique selected by Dr. Myers.
Once anesthesia is administered, Dr. Myers makes the planned incisions and carefully lifts the skin and underlying tissues. If needed, small portions of muscle that cause frown lines are altered or removed to reduce furrowing between the brows.
Afterward, the skin and tissue are repositioned, and Dr. Myers secures them in place. The surgery usually lasts between one and two hours, but may take longer if additional procedures, such as eyelid surgery, are performed at the same time.
What to Expect After Your Brow Lift Procedure
The brow lift recovery follows a relatively predictable timeline, though individual experiences may vary.
In the first 48 hours, expect moderate discomfort, swelling, and bruising around your forehead, eyes, and sometimes cheeks. Pain medication will be prescribed, and keeping your head elevated helps reduce swelling.
Within the first week, visible signs of surgery start to fade. Many patients return to light activities or remote work within 7-10 days, though some swelling and bruising may remain.
Between two and three weeks, bruising usually resolves, and most patients can resume normal activities, including light exercise as approved by the surgeon.
Full recovery continues over the following months. Most patients see final results within 2-3 months, though subtle changes may persist for up to six months.
Potential Risks and Complications
Like all surgeries, a brow lift carries certain risks that patients should consider.
Common temporary side effects include numbness, itching, or unusual sensations around the incision sites, which usually resolve within a few months. Less common complications include brow asymmetry, overcorrection (too high), or under-correction (insufficient lift). An experienced surgeon like Dr. Myers reduces these risks through careful planning.
Infections, though rare, can occur. Dr. Myers will provide wound care instructions and prescribe antibiotics to reduce this risk. Hair loss around the incision is possible, especially with the coronal approach, and may be temporary or permanent.
The most serious risk is facial nerve injury, potentially affecting eyebrow movement or facial expressions. Permanent nerve damage is extremely rare with a qualified surgeon like Dr. Myers.
Results Expected From Brow Lift Surgery
Most patients see a noticeable improvement in eyebrow position, achieving a refreshed, more alert appearance. The procedure smooths the forehead, reducing horizontal and frown lines.
A well-executed brow lift offers natural-looking results without an overly surprised appearance. Dr. Myers will tailor your lift for a youthful yet natural look.
Brow lifts provide long-lasting results, typically lasting 5-10 years or more, though aging continues. Many patients experience a boost in self-confidence, feeling their appearance better aligns with their inner vitality.

People Can't Believe I'm 75!
by Joanne Wilburn
Category: reviewsI'm 75 years old, and recently upon visiting various doctors, I've had three of them either walk past me staring or even walk past the examination room, not recognizing their 75 year old patient. I've even had one nurse tell me the doctor thought he had the wrong person in the examination room because my skin looked so young! People actually come up to me and ask to touch my face. I love it!
Professional and caring, skilled healthcare team!
by Stacey Longtin-Horton
Category: reviewsIn late October I had a work-related injury that resulted in a partial amputation of my left thumb. Because my bone was exposed, reconstructive surgery was needed in order to minimize infection and to save what I had left of my thumb. Dr. Kevin Myers determined that a Moberg advancement flap was the best option to maintain full range of motion and the most thumb length possible. My overall experience here was absolutely amazing! The entire staff was very accommodating and kind and worked in a very professional matter. They were always there to answer questions when I had them. My surgery went very well, and recovery was easy. A little over two months later, I now have a fully functioning thumb with full feeling and full range of motion! I am totally impressed with the work that the healthcare staff did! Although I hope to never need any reconstructive surgery again, I would not hesitate coming back here if I needed to for any issue. 100% would recommend to friends or family.
