The skin on the upper arms can lose its firmness over time due to natural aging, weight changes, and the constant downward pull of gravity. When this occurs, you may notice that the sagging does not respond to exercise or any other lifestyle efforts. While topical products and energy-based devices may provide some degree of skin tightening, the results are usually limited for more significant concerns.
For patients who experience moderate to severe skin laxity, surgical intervention can provide more comprehensive improvement. An arm lift, also called brachioplasty, involves the removal of excess skin and the reshaping of the underlying tissues. At Northstate Plastic Surgery in Chico, CA, we perform this procedure for patients seeking a more defined appearance in the upper arms.
What Is an Arm Lift?
Also known as brachioplasty. An upper arm lift, or brachioplasty, reshapes the upper arm to tighten loose skin and remove fat that often creates a “bat wing” appearance under the arm. Removing the excess skin caused by weight loss or natural aging can tighten loose skin that extends from the underarm area to the elbow; liposuction is sometimes used in combination to achieve the best results. Every year, thousands of people undergo successful upper-arm-lift surgery and are pleased with the results.
What Does an Arm Lift Treat?
- Sagging: Loose skin often hangs from the upper arms because of gravity pulling down on skin that is becoming less elastic with age. Exercise can strengthen the underlying muscles, but it cannot remove the extra folds of skin. An upper arm lift can help address this issue by removing excess tissue.
- Reduced Elasticity: Skin naturally loses its ability to contract after stretching from weight fluctuations or the aging process. Once elasticity declines, the arms may look deflated even when muscle tone is present. Surgical tightening can improve the shape of the arm by removing lax skin that no longer retracts.
- Uneven Arm Contour: The upper arms may look disproportionate compared to the rest of the body when sagging skin accumulates. Even with consistent exercise and a stable weight, extra tissue in this area can remain. An arm lift can restore a more balanced contour that matches the natural proportions of the body.
The Benefits of Arm Lift Surgery
Boosts Your Confidence in Short Sleeves
Warm weather and social gatherings often call for clothing that leaves the arms uncovered. When sagging skin makes you hesitant to wear short sleeves, an arm lift can help create a smoother contour so you feel more comfortable showing your arms.
Relieves Irritation
Excess skin on the arms can rub against the body and cause irritation during daily movement. Even small activities like exercising or reaching overhead may become uncomfortable when extra folds of skin are present. Removing the loose tissue can reduce friction, which can make daily activities easier and less bothersome.
Targets Stubborn Fat
Weight loss and exercise can slim the arms to an extent, but stubborn fat pockets sometimes remain in areas where skin is already sagging. An arm lift can be combined with liposuction to address both skin laxity and lingering fat for a more refined result. Patients who consider plastic surgery for their arms often choose this option when they want more dramatic improvement than lifestyle changes can provide.
Who Can Consider an Upper Arm Lift?
You can consider an upper arm lift:
- If your weight is normal, but you feel your shape is marred by underarm laxity.
- If you have lost a massive amount of weight and are left with excess upper-arm skin and fat that may resemble bat wings.
- If you are willing to accept a scar in exchange for shapelier arms.
Those who are still in the process of losing weight are not good candidates, since additional changes in body size could affect the results. Individuals with uncontrolled medical conditions that increase surgical risks may also be advised to postpone surgery. Smoking can interfere with healing, so those who are not able to stop before and after surgery may not be suitable candidates for an upper arm lift.
The Arm Lift Consultation Process
The first step before scheduling surgery involves meeting with us to talk through your concerns and goals. We evaluate the condition of your arm skin, check for excess fat, and discuss your medical history to make sure you are a good candidate. The consultation also gives you time to ask questions and understand the recovery process in detail. We may take measurements and photos to plan the surgery and decide on the incision placement that will give you the best contour.
Preparing for an Arm Lift
Good preparation can make your arm lift recovery smoother and help you feel more comfortable after surgery. We may recommend lab work, medication adjustments, or stopping smoking to reduce risks during healing. Arranging your home in advance is also helpful, such as keeping frequently used items at waist height to avoid reaching, and preparing a comfortable recovery space with pillows and easy access to water and light snacks. Make sure to prepare some meals ahead of time that you can keep in the freezer and thaw out when you get hungry after surgery. Stocking up on loose clothing that opens in the front can also make dressing easier in the first days after surgery.
The Arm Lift Procedure Step by Step
An arm lift begins with anesthesia to keep you comfortable during your surgery. Then we make carefully placed incisions along the inner arm or the back of the arm, depending on the amount of skin that needs to be removed. Once the incisions are made, we remove excess skin and may use liposuction to reduce stubborn fat deposits. The underlying tissues are tightened and reshaped before the skin is smoothed over the new contour. Finally, the incisions are closed with sutures, and dressings are applied to protect the area as you begin healing.
What to Expect From Arm Lift Recovery
Recovery from an arm lift usually involves some swelling and bruising that gradually improves over the following weeks. Compression garments are often recommended to help minimize swelling and support the new shape of the arms as they heal. You may notice a feeling of tightness as the incisions close and the tissues adjust to their new contour, which is a normal part of the process. You can resume some light activity right away, but postpone anything more strenuous until we confirm it is safe. Your energy and mobility will steadily return as healing progresses, and you will be able to slowly ease back into your usual routines.
Basic Post-Surgery Instructions
We provide clear instructions that are easy to follow after your surgery so your healing stays on track. Keep your incisions clean and dry, and avoid applying lotions or creams until we say it is safe. Make sure to wear your compression garment for as long as we recommend so you can reduce swelling and support tissue healing.
Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or stretching the arms too far should be avoided in the first stages of recovery. Anyone considering arm plastic surgery should know that follow-up appointments are important for monitoring progress and adjusting care as needed. We are available to guide you through every step, from wound care to gradually returning to your normal activities.
What to Consider When Choosing Arm Lift Surgery
- Scarring: An arm lift requires incisions, and those incisions leave scars along the inner or back of the arms. While scars fade with healing, they will always be present to some degree, so it is important to weigh the tradeoff between smoother contours and visible marks.
- Time Away From Work: Most people need to plan for at least one to two weeks off work, depending on the type of job they have. Those with physically demanding roles may need additional time to recover before safely resuming full duties.
- Surgical Risks: All surgery carries risks such as bleeding, infection, or reactions to anesthesia. Choosing an experienced surgeon and following aftercare instructions carefully helps reduce these risks.
- Temporary Discomfort: Swelling, bruising, and soreness are expected as your body heals. These effects improve gradually, but they can affect your mobility and comfort during the first stages of recovery.
- Lifestyle Adjustments: Exercise routines and other physical activities may need to be modified while your arms heal. Planning ahead for help with chores or child care can make recovery smoother and less stressful.
Frequently Asked Questions About Arm Lift Surgery?
How Long Will My Arm Lift Results Last?
The results of arm surgery are long-lasting, but the natural aging process will continue to affect your skin and tissues. Once excess skin is removed, changes in weight or skin elasticity can gradually influence the contour of your arms again. Maintaining a stable weight and staying active can help you preserve the improvements for years.
Can an Arm Lift Be Combined With Other Surgeries?
An arm lift is often performed as part of a larger body contouring plan, especially after major weight loss. Some people choose to combine it with breast procedures, a tummy tuck, or liposuction to address multiple areas at once and reduce the total number of recovery periods. Combining surgeries can lengthen operative time and healing, but it may also streamline the overall process if you want more than one area corrected. We will review your health, goals, and recovery capacity to determine whether combining procedures makes sense for you.
How Much Does an Arm Lift Cost?
The cost of an arm lift varies because it depends on factors such as the extent of skin removal, the need for liposuction, and the complexity of the surgical plan. Fees can also include anesthesia, operating room use, and follow-up visits. We provide a detailed estimate during your consultation so you understand all expected costs before scheduling surgery.
Does Insurance Cover Arm Lift Surgery?
Insurance does not usually cover an arm lift, since it is generally considered cosmetic rather than medically necessary. There are rare exceptions, such as cases where excessive skin causes recurring rashes or infections that require medical documentation. If coverage is not available, financing options can sometimes help make the procedure more manageable. We encourage you to check directly with your insurance provider for specifics, as policies and criteria can differ widely.
When Can I Go Back to Work After an Arm Lift?
Recovery timelines from arm lift procedures vary, but most people can expect to return to light work within one to two weeks. Jobs that involve lifting, reaching, or repetitive arm movements may require more time away to allow the incisions and tissues to heal safely. It is common to experience some lingering tightness or swelling even after returning to work, but those effects usually do not interfere with regular office tasks. More physically demanding activities should wait until you receive clearance during your follow-up visits.

People Can't Believe I'm 75!
by Joanne Wilburn
Category: reviewsI'm 75 years old, and recently upon visiting various doctors, I've had three of them either walk past me staring or even walk past the examination room, not recognizing their 75 year old patient. I've even had one nurse tell me the doctor thought he had the wrong person in the examination room because my skin looked so young! People actually come up to me and ask to touch my face. I love it!
Professional and caring, skilled healthcare team!
by Stacey Longtin-Horton
Category: reviewsIn late October I had a work-related injury that resulted in a partial amputation of my left thumb. Because my bone was exposed, reconstructive surgery was needed in order to minimize infection and to save what I had left of my thumb. Dr. Kevin Myers determined that a Moberg advancement flap was the best option to maintain full range of motion and the most thumb length possible. My overall experience here was absolutely amazing! The entire staff was very accommodating and kind and worked in a very professional matter. They were always there to answer questions when I had them. My surgery went very well, and recovery was easy. A little over two months later, I now have a fully functioning thumb with full feeling and full range of motion! I am totally impressed with the work that the healthcare staff did! Although I hope to never need any reconstructive surgery again, I would not hesitate coming back here if I needed to for any issue. 100% would recommend to friends or family.
