Breast Reduction

arms

Overly large breasts can place a constant strain on your body and limit your daily comfort. From chronic back and shoulder pain to unwanted attention and difficulty finding clothes that fit, the physical and emotional impact is often overwhelming.

At Northstate Plastic Surgery in Chico, CA, breast reduction can be a life-changing experience. Whether you’re seeking relief from discomfort or hoping to achieve a more balanced silhouette, we’re here to help you feel comfortable, confident, and fully yourself again.

What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to create a breast size that is more proportionate to your body.

The goal of breast reduction surgery is to reduce the size of your breasts and reshape them so that they are proportionate to the rest of your body and are no longer a source of physical discomfort. This commonly requested, predictable procedure has the dual benefits of improving your appearance while relieving the physical and emotional burden of overly large breasts.

When To Consider Breast Reduction

  • If your breasts are too large for your body frame and create neck, back, or shoulder pain
  • If you have heavy breasts with nipples and areolas (pigmented skin surrounding the nipples) that point downward
  • If one breast is much larger than the other
  • If you are unhappy and self-conscious about the large appearance of your breasts

Benefits of Breast Reduction

Relief from Chronic Pain in the Neck, Shoulders, And Back

Excess breast weight often strains the upper body, leading to persistent discomfort and tension. Breast reduction surgery can significantly reduce this physical burden, providing lasting pain relief.

Improved Posture and Ease of Movement

Overly large breasts can cause postural imbalances that worsen over time. By reducing their size and weight, patients often experience better spinal alignment and increased mobility.

Greater Comfort During Exercise And Physical Activity

Physical activities like running or aerobics can be uncomfortable or even painful with large, heavy breasts. After surgery, many patients experience a renewed sense of confidence and increased ease in staying active.

Enhanced Body Proportions And Silhouette

Breast reduction helps create a more balanced figure by bringing the chest into proportion with the rest of the body. This often results in a more refined, symmetrical appearance.

Increased Confidence In Clothing Fit And Style

Finding supportive or flattering clothing can be frustrating when you have an oversized bust. After reduction, patients often report more freedom in fashion choices and greater satisfaction with their overall appearance.

What to Expect During Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is a carefully planned procedure that prioritizes both function and aesthetics. Here’s what you can expect at each stage of the process:

Anesthesia and Surgical Preparation

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia to ensure your comfort and safety throughout. Once you’re fully sedated, Dr. Myers will prepare the surgical area and make precise markings based on your anatomy and surgical goals.

Incision Placement and Tissue Removal

Common incision patterns include a circular incision around the areola, a vertical line down the breast, and occasionally a horizontal line along the breast crease (anchor or inverted-T technique). Through these incisions, Dr. Myers will remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce volume and relieve physical strain.

Nipple Repositioning and Reshaping

The nipple-areolar complex is typically lifted to a higher, more natural position while preserving its connection to underlying blood vessels and nerves whenever possible. In some cases, the areola may also be reduced in size to better match the new breast proportions.

Closing the Incisions

Once the desired shape and size are achieved, Dr. Myers will close the incisions with layered sutures. These help support the new breast contour and promote healing, with external stitches often designed to minimize visible scarring.

Recovery and Immediate Aftercare

After surgery, you’ll be taken to a recovery area where your vital signs will be monitored as you wake up from anesthesia. Your chest will be bandaged, and you may be fitted with a surgical bra to provide gentle compression and support during the initial healing phase.

Recovery and Downtime

Understanding the recovery timeline after breast reduction can help you prepare for a smoother healing process. Most patients experience steady improvement within the first few weeks, with full results continuing to develop over time.

First Few Days

Swelling, bruising, and mild to moderate soreness are normal during the initial recovery period. Prescription or over-the-counter pain medication may be recommended, and you’ll be advised to wear a surgical bra to support your breasts and minimize movement.

1 to 2 Weeks

Many patients feel well enough to return to work and light activities within 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the nature of their job. During this time, it’s important to avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activity, or sleeping on your stomach to protect the incisions and promote healing.

4 to 6 Weeks

Most physical restrictions are typically lifted by the 4–6 week mark, allowing for the resumption of exercise and more vigorous movement. By this point, swelling has usually diminished significantly, and your breasts will begin to settle into their new shape.

Scar Maturation and Final Results

Scars will initially appear pink or red, but they typically fade and flatten over several months. With proper care, including sun protection and scar treatments if recommended, many patients find their scars become minimally noticeable over time.

Preparing for Breast Reduction Surgery

Preparing for breast reduction surgery involves stopping smoking, avoiding certain medications, and arranging for a ride home. Wear loose, comfortable clothing on surgery day. Set up a recovery space with essentials like pillows and medication. Follow all pre-op instructions to support healing and ensure a safe, successful outcome.

Types of Incision Techniques for Breast Reduction

The type of incision used in breast reduction surgery plays a key role in shaping the final result and minimizing visible scarring. Dr. Myers will recommend an approach based on your breast size, skin elasticity, and the amount of tissue to be removed. Below are the most commonly used techniques:

Anchor (Inverted-T) Incision

This method involves three incisions: one around the areola, a vertical line down to the breast crease, and a horizontal line along the inframammary fold. It provides the most access for tissue removal and reshaping, making it ideal for patients with very large or pendulous breasts.

Lollipop (Vertical) Incision

The lollipop incision includes an incision around the areola and a vertical line extending down to the breast crease. It offers excellent reshaping with less scarring than the anchor technique, and is often used for moderate breast reductions.

Donut (Periareolar) Incision

Also known as the Benelli technique, this involves a circular incision around the areola only. It is best suited for patients who need a smaller reduction or mild lift, resulting in minimal visible scarring.

Each technique is carefully selected to achieve the best possible aesthetic outcome, tailored to your anatomy and goals. We will review the options in detail during your consultation to ensure you’re comfortable with the recommended plan.

Risks and Complications of Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a safe and well-established procedure, but like any surgery, it does carry some risks. Understanding these potential complications can help you make an informed decision and feel more confident throughout your surgical journey.

Common risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, and temporary or permanent changes in nipple or breast sensation. Some patients may experience asymmetry between breasts, delayed wound healing, or fluid accumulation. There is also a possibility of issues related to breastfeeding in the future, particularly depending on the surgical technique used.

Most complications are rare, especially when the procedure is performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon using proper safety protocols. Dr. Myers will review all potential risks with you during your consultation and provide detailed instructions to reduce the chance of complications and promote smooth healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do breast reduction results last?

The results of breast reduction surgery are considered long-lasting. However, natural aging processes, hormonal shifts, pregnancy, or significant weight changes can affect the size and shape of your breasts over time. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle can help preserve your surgical outcome. Most patients enjoy lasting relief from physical discomfort and improved body proportions for many years after surgery.

Will I need to wear a special bra after surgery?

Yes, you’ll be instructed to wear a surgical bra or compression garment immediately following your procedure. This helps reduce swelling, supports healing tissues, and maintains the new breast shape. Most patients wear this garment for several weeks before transitioning to a soft, supportive bra. Underwire bras should be avoided during the early stages of recovery.

Can breast reduction improve symmetry?

Absolutely. Breast reduction is often used to correct asymmetry when one breast is noticeably larger than the other. During surgery, we can remove different amounts of tissue from each breast to create a more even, balanced result. The nipples can also be adjusted in size and position for improved symmetry. While minor differences may still exist, most patients see a significant improvement in breast balance.

When can I sleep on my side again?

Patients are typically advised to sleep on their back for at least two to three weeks after surgery. Sleeping on your side too early can place pressure on healing incisions and affect breast shape. Once cleared by us (usually after the initial recovery phase), you may resume side sleeping, using extra pillows for support. Always follow your surgeon’s specific guidelines to protect your results.

Are drains used during breast reduction surgery?

Some breast reduction procedures require surgical drains to remove excess fluid and reduce swelling. Whether or not drains are used depends on the technique and the amount of tissue removed. If placed, they are usually removed within a few days during a follow-up visit. Your care team will show you how to care for them properly until they are removed.

Will my breasts still look natural?

Yes, creating a natural, proportionate look is a key goal of breast reduction surgery. Dr. Myers will shape the breast and reposition the nipple to match your body frame and aesthetic preferences. Most patients are pleased with their softer, more lifted appearance after surgery. Final results continue to refine over the months following recovery.

Does insurance cover breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery may be covered by insurance, especially when it is performed to relieve chronic pain, rashes, posture problems, or other medically documented symptoms.

However, specific coverage varies by provider and typically requires detailed documentation of medical necessity. This may include records of failed conservative treatments, photographs, and letters from your primary care provider or specialists. Our office can guide you through the pre-authorization process, submit the necessary paperwork, and help determine your eligibility for insurance reimbursement.

People Can't Believe I'm 75!

by Joanne Wilburn

Aug23,2019

I'm 75 years old, and recently upon visiting various doctors, I've had three of them either walk past me staring or even walk past the examination room, not recognizing their 75 year old patient. I've even had one nurse tell me the doctor thought he had the wrong person in the examination room because my skin looked so young! People actually come up to me and ask to touch my face. I love it!

Professional and caring, skilled healthcare team!

by Stacey Longtin-Horton

Jan18,2019

In late October I had a work-related injury that resulted in a partial amputation of my left thumb. Because my bone was exposed, reconstructive surgery was needed in order to minimize infection and to save what I had left of my thumb. Dr. Kevin Myers determined that a Moberg advancement flap was the best option to maintain full range of motion and the most thumb length possible. My overall experience here was absolutely amazing! The entire staff was very accommodating and kind and worked in a very professional matter. They were always there to answer questions when I had them. My surgery went very well, and recovery was easy. A little over two months later, I now have a fully functioning thumb with full feeling and full range of motion! I am totally impressed with the work that the healthcare staff did! Although I hope to never need any reconstructive surgery again, I would not hesitate coming back here if I needed to for any issue. 100% would recommend to friends or family.
