Concerns such as a prominent nasal hump, a drooping tip, asymmetry, or breathing difficulties can influence your facial balance and how you feel in your skin. Because your nose is such a central feature, even small irregularities can be noticeable and affect how you perceive yourself in photos or social situations.
At NorthState Plastic Surgery in Chico, CA, we offer nose reshaping surgery (rhinoplasty) to refine the structure of the nose and, when needed, improve airflow for easier breathing. By customizing the procedure to your facial proportions and goals, we create results that look natural and harmonious, enhancing your confidence while maintaining your unique character.
What Is Nose Reshaping?
Also known as rhinoplasty, nose reshaping or nose job, it is a surgical procedure that refines the appearance of the nose. It some cases, it can also improve nasal breathing.
How Nose Reshaping Works
During rhinoplasty, the internal structures of the nose are carefully adjusted to enhance shape, balance, and breathing function. The procedure typically involves refining cartilage, repositioning bone, and reshaping the nasal tip to create a proportional and natural-looking result. Incisions may be placed either inside the nostrils or across the columella (the small strip of tissue between the nostrils), depending on the level of change desired.
As your nose heals, the newly shaped internal framework is supported by your own tissues, allowing the results to settle gradually and naturally. Your body continues to adapt and remodel the nasal structure over time, which means that the final results appear progressively as the swelling resolves. If breathing concerns are also corrected, adjustments to the septum and internal nasal passages help increase airflow and improve comfort.
When To Consider Nose Surgery:
- If you are unhappy with the shape, size or angle of your nose
- If your nose is too large, too small or not in proportion to the rest of your face
- If you have breathing problems resulting from irregularities inside your nose
- If you have a nasal hump or a nasal tip that is drooping, too elevated or wide
What Are the Benefits of Nose Reshaping?
Enhanced Facial Balance
Rhinoplasty brings your nose into better proportion with the rest of your face. Even small changes can create more symmetry and smoother profile lines, helping your facial features appear more harmonious overall.
Improved Nasal Breathing
When structural obstructions inside your nose are corrected, airflow is smoother and breathing is easier. This is especially beneficial for individuals with a deviated septum or chronic nasal congestion.
Natural-Looking Results
The procedure focuses on subtle refinement, not altering your identity. The goal is to preserve what makes your face unique while enhancing shape and proportion in a way that looks completely natural.
Long-Lasting Change
Rhinoplasty results are stable and long-lasting because your own cartilage and bone are reshaped. There is no need for ongoing maintenance.
Cosmetic vs. Functional Rhinoplasty: What Is the Difference?
Not all rhinoplasty procedures are performed for the same reason. Rhinoplasty may involve cosmetic refinement, functional correction, or both.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty
Cosmetic rhinoplasty focuses on changing the outward appearance of the nose. Patients may seek to:
- Reduce or refine the bridge
- Smooth a nasal hump
- Narrow or reshape the nostrils
- Adjust the angle between the nose and upper lip
- Refine the nasal tip (if it appears bulbous, drooping, or overly projected)
- Improve overall facial harmony
Functional Rhinoplasty
Functional rhinoplasty addresses structural issues that interfere with breathing. These concerns may be caused by:
- A deviated septum
- Enlarged or uneven internal structures
- Past injury or trauma
- Congenital irregularities
In many cases, functional and cosmetic correction are combined into one procedure, restoring both form and function.
What to Expect With Nose Reshaping
Before Your Procedure
Before your rhinoplasty, you’ll meet with Dr. Kevin D. Myers to review your goals, medical history, preferences, and concerns. During this consultation, Dr. Myers will assess the internal and external structure of your nose, discuss the features you’d like to refine, and explain the options that best support both appearance and function. Photographs may be taken to help plan your treatment.
You will receive instructions on how to prepare in the days leading up to surgery, such as avoiding certain medications or supplements and planning for a comfortable recovery environment at home. If you have any questions or need clarification at any point, please don’t hesitate to discuss them during your consultation.
During the Procedure
Nose reshaping is performed under general anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Small incisions are made either inside the nostrils or across the columella, depending on the technique used. Dr. Myers then adjusts the bone, cartilage, and soft tissue to refine the shape or improve breathing function. Most patients return home the same day. Some swelling and congestion are normal initially and begin to improve steadily in the first days and weeks.
Initial Recovery Process
During the first week, a small external splint may be placed to help support your nose as it heals. Some bruising or swelling around the eyes is common. Many patients feel comfortable returning to work or school within 7 to 10 days. While your results will continue to refine over time, most daily activities can be resumed relatively soon under Dr. Myers’ guidance.
Long-Term Healing and Results
As swelling continues to decrease in the weeks and months following surgery, your nose’s new shape becomes more apparent. Full refinement is often visible within a year. Following Dr. Myers’ care instructions helps ensure a smooth recovery and a result that blends naturally with your facial features.
What Is Recovery Like After Nose Reshaping?
Recovery Overview
Healing after rhinoplasty occurs gradually and varies from person to person. The majority of swelling and bruising improve within the first few weeks, while more refined changes continue to develop over several months. .
First Few Days
Immediately after surgery, you may experience swelling, congestion, and mild discomfort around your nose and under your eyes. A small splint is often placed to protect and support your nose as it settles into its new shape. Most patients can return home the same day. Prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication can help you maintain comfort as you rest.
1 to 2 Weeks
Within one to two weeks, bruising and swelling begin to noticeably fade. Many patients feel ready to return to school, work, or light social activities during this period. We will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your healing and remove any splints or sutures as needed. Mild congestion or pressure is expected but will gradually improve.
Early Healing Phase
Over the next few weeks to months, your nose continues to settle. Swelling subsides and the new contours become more defined. Exercise and strenuous activities are typically reintroduced gradually, depending on your progress and Dr. Myers’ recommendations. Protecting your nose from accidental bumps or pressure is especially important during this stage.
Final Results
While improvements are noticeable early on, full results from rhinoplasty can take up to a year as the last traces of swelling resolve. Once healed, the results of rhinoplasty are long-lasting, providing a balanced and natural appearance, as well as improved breathing function where applicable.
How Do I Prepare for Nose Reshaping Surgery?
Dr. Myers may recommend stopping smoking and avoiding certain medications or supplements that could increase the risk of bleeding. Depending on your health, lab work or medical clearance may be needed before surgery.
Plan to have someone drive you home and stay with you for the first night. On the day of surgery, wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing makeup, jewelry, or contact lenses. At home, it can be helpful to prepare a comfortable resting area with pillows to keep your head elevated, easy-to-reach necessities, and any recommended aftercare supplies.
What Are the Risks of Nose Reshaping?
Rhinoplasty has been performed safely and effectively for decades. However, it is still a surgical procedure, and it’s important to understand the potential risks before deciding to move forward. In addition, knowing what may occur allows you to prepare properly and take an active role in your healing process.
Possible risks may include swelling, bruising, bleeding, infection, or temporary congestion. Some patients may experience numbness around the nose or changes in skin sensation as the tissue heals. In rare cases, additional adjustments may be needed if the nose does not heal exactly as planned or if breathing issues persist. These situations are uncommon, but they’re important to be aware of.
Frequently Asked Questions About Nose Reshaping
Is there an ideal age for rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is recommended only after facial growth is complete, typically around age 16 or older. There is no upper age limit, provided you are in good overall health and cleared for surgery.
Will I have visible scars?
If an open rhinoplasty approach is used, the incision is placed in the natural crease between the nostrils, where it generally heals very discreetly. Closed rhinoplasty places all incisions inside the nose. Dr. Myers will recommend the approach best suited to your needs.
How long do results last?
Rhinoplasty results are considered permanent. While the nose will continue to change subtly as part of natural aging, the refinement achieved through surgery is long-lasting.
Will my nose look noticeably different to other people?
Rhinoplasty is designed to create a natural improvement, so your results should blend with your existing features. The change does not need to be dramatic unless you want it to be.

People Can't Believe I'm 75!
by Joanne Wilburn
Category: reviewsI'm 75 years old, and recently upon visiting various doctors, I've had three of them either walk past me staring or even walk past the examination room, not recognizing their 75 year old patient. I've even had one nurse tell me the doctor thought he had the wrong person in the examination room because my skin looked so young! People actually come up to me and ask to touch my face. I love it!
Professional and caring, skilled healthcare team!
by Stacey Longtin-Horton
Category: reviewsIn late October I had a work-related injury that resulted in a partial amputation of my left thumb. Because my bone was exposed, reconstructive surgery was needed in order to minimize infection and to save what I had left of my thumb. Dr. Kevin Myers determined that a Moberg advancement flap was the best option to maintain full range of motion and the most thumb length possible. My overall experience here was absolutely amazing! The entire staff was very accommodating and kind and worked in a very professional matter. They were always there to answer questions when I had them. My surgery went very well, and recovery was easy. A little over two months later, I now have a fully functioning thumb with full feeling and full range of motion! I am totally impressed with the work that the healthcare staff did! Although I hope to never need any reconstructive surgery again, I would not hesitate coming back here if I needed to for any issue. 100% would recommend to friends or family.
