Breasts are a sign of femininity and womanhood. If you aren’t happy with the breasts you were born with, there is a way to change them and make them everything you’ve ever wanted them to be. At Northstate Plastic Surgery Associates in Chico, CA, we offer breast augmentation. This surgery can balance your figure, improve the shape of your breasts, increase your bra size, and in doing so, give you the kind of confidence you’ve never experienced before.
What Does Breast Augmentation Mean?
Breast augmentation is the technical, medical term for breast enhancement. It is an elective cosmetic surgical procedure meant to increase the size and volume of the breasts through an implant, or at times, through a fat transfer. Not only can it make the breasts larger, but it can give them a more aesthetically pleasing shape. This surgery is designed for those who want to change their breasts for cosmetic reasons or after a mastectomy.
What Does a Breast Enhancement Do?
Breast enhancements are most well-known for their ability to increase the size of the breasts, but they can also address and improve other physical and emotional concerns.
It Can Increase Confidence
Breast size and shape affect many women’s confidence to the point that they feel self-conscious in anything from a swimsuit to regular clothes. Breast augmentation can give patients a newfound sense of confidence in their appearance. For some women, this procedure is life-changing. For women who have lost their breast tissue while fighting cancer, this procedure can restore what the disease took from them and, in doing so, restore their confidence as well.
It Improves the Body Proportions
Body proportions are everything when it comes to aesthetics. Sometimes women struggle with body proportions because they have the waistline, they have the hips, but they don’t have the breast proportions. Breast augmentation can complete the hourglass figure by giving you a breast circumference that gives you the most aesthetically pleasing appearance, increasing your confidence and making you feel content with your body, down to the last curve.
It Can Correct Symmetry
Some women have breasts that are two different sizes. Typically it’s the left side that is bigger than the right, which can lead to discomfort for some women and self-consciousness when wearing certain clothes or swimsuits. Breast augmentation is the best way to even out the breasts and correct symmetry so that you are perfectly proportional. This will help increase your confidence and make you feel better about your breasts no matter what you’re wearing.
It Increases Fullness
There’s no set standard for breast size, but some women want bigger breasts because it is a sign of womanhood. If you have always struggled with small breasts, you may have spent a good portion of your younger years feeling self-conscious about your appearance. This procedure can change everything. It can increase the fullness of your breasts so that you can finally reach your ideal aesthetic.
Customizing Your Augmentation
One of the most important steps in this process is your consultation because not only does it confirm that you are a good candidate for this procedure but it helps customize your augmentation so that you can get everything you want out of this procedure. From choosing your implant type to determining your incision location, you’ll discuss anything and everything about your procedure down to the very last detail.
Determining Incisions
With every elective surgical procedure, there is always an incision, but we do everything we can to choose the best spot based on your preference so that you get the best possible outcome. Our surgeon will help determine the best incision that will help meet your goals.
Intramammary
This location is on the underside of the breast in the crease area where the breast ends, and the abdominal wall begins. This incision is the most common
because it helps accommodate the insertion of larger implants. This incision is always short in width and results in hidden scarring.
Periareolar
This incision is made along the lower half of the nipple and results in less visible scarring than the intramammary incision. It is often used during surgery with saline implants or smaller breast augmentation.
Choosing Implants
There are three different types of implants that are most often used during this procedure. These implants have different purposes and are made of different materials and can correct different issues with the breasts. The type of implant that’s right for you all depends on your goals. During your initial consultation with our surgeon, you will discuss your goals and your concerns and he will help you determine which implant will help you meet all of your aesthetic needs.
Silicone Gel
Silicone implants are made of a silicone outer shell material that is filled with gel. There are different types of silicone implants, and each type can give you a different type of look. There are softer implants, firmer implants, and implants that will make you look and feel more natural.
There are different sizes and shapes which can help meet the needs of women who are looking to improve the balance and symmetry of their breasts. When compared to other implants, silicone implants are more firm than others, but they are safe and reliable and give you natural-looking results.
Saline
Saline implants are filled with saline water which is saltwater inside of a silicone shell. These implants are considered the safest and most comfortable version which is why they have become so popular over time. Those who choose this procedure often ask for saline implants because they know someone who has had a positive experience with these implants and want to replicate that in their goals.
Saline Implants With Structure
The newest implants on the market are structured saline implants. These implants look and feel natural but don’t use any silicone gel. They have different shells that separate the outer portion from the inside that contains saline. The entire shape and structure of these implants reduce the risk of implant collapse or wrinkling.
Choosing Your Implant Position
The position of your implant is another factor that must be predetermined before your procedure. When you sit down with our surgeon, you’ll discuss this aspect of your augmentation and determine the best position for your body based on your ultimate aesthetic goals. The two primary positions include over the chest muscle and under the chest muscle.
Preparing for Your Procedure
One of the most important ways that you can prepare for your procedure is to prepare for your recovery. A restful recovery spent focusing on taking care of your body, eating healthy, and resting will help you recover faster and get to enjoy your results that much sooner.
Ask For Help
Enlist someone who can help you in the days following your procedure. Whether you ask your nanny to work extra hours, hire a mother’s helper, or ask a friend or relative to help, you will need someone who can do the heavy lifting for you during the first several days post-op. You should have someone who can help with childcare, school carpooling, cooking, and shopping.
Prepare Your Meals
Plan your meals in advance before the day of your surgery. If you’re not a planner, there are some easy ways to plan ahead, like cooking meals that you can freeze and reheat during your recovery period. You can also temporarily schedule a healthy meal delivery service to bring your pre-made meals so you don’t have to get up off your feet to cook and clean the kitchen.
Focus on Your Health
Sometimes recovery and rest can make you feel lethargic and like comfort eating, but we encourage you to fight that temptation and do the opposite. You should focus on fueling your body with healthy foods that will promote your recovery. Eat plenty of lean proteins, healthy fats, and green leafy vegetables. Avoid alcohol consumption, foods high in salt or sugar, and processed foods. Hydrate your body to help promote healing, flush toxins, and keep your body healthy.
Have Realistic Expectations
Knowing how your recovery will look is an important part of planning for your procedure. You should plan on spending at least one to two weeks post-op resting and recovering. Most patients can resume work after two weeks and get back to their regular exercise routine within a month of their procedure date. You will also be provided with a surgical bra that will help promote healing and support your breasts during the first several weeks following your procedure.
Am I a Candidate?
If you want to increase your confidence by increasing your bust size, you are most likely a candidate for breast augmentation. During your initial consultation, we’ll determine if this procedure is right for you based on your health history, your current state of health, your goals, and your expectations. Once we determine that you are in fact a candidate, we’ll begin customizing your procedure to create a treatment plan that helps you reach your goals.

People Can't Believe I'm 75!
by Joanne Wilburn
Category: reviewsI'm 75 years old, and recently upon visiting various doctors, I've had three of them either walk past me staring or even walk past the examination room, not recognizing their 75 year old patient. I've even had one nurse tell me the doctor thought he had the wrong person in the examination room because my skin looked so young! People actually come up to me and ask to touch my face. I love it!
Professional and caring, skilled healthcare team!
by Stacey Longtin-Horton
Category: reviewsIn late October I had a work-related injury that resulted in a partial amputation of my left thumb. Because my bone was exposed, reconstructive surgery was needed in order to minimize infection and to save what I had left of my thumb. Dr. Kevin Myers determined that a Moberg advancement flap was the best option to maintain full range of motion and the most thumb length possible. My overall experience here was absolutely amazing! The entire staff was very accommodating and kind and worked in a very professional matter. They were always there to answer questions when I had them. My surgery went very well, and recovery was easy. A little over two months later, I now have a fully functioning thumb with full feeling and full range of motion! I am totally impressed with the work that the healthcare staff did! Although I hope to never need any reconstructive surgery again, I would not hesitate coming back here if I needed to for any issue. 100% would recommend to friends or family.
